| As
you may imagine, when something is in production, not everything remains
the same until the end. Certain things are altered or cut out entirely
in the final product. DSK is no exception. Many characters, events
and even whole storylines have been changed or removed along the way.
It's difficult to remember everything, but here we have tried to collect
together certain things that we managed to document. I suppose the
information on this page is slightly esoteric, but it's a curious
read nonetheless. . |

Laurenza
Laurenza's character has noticeably changed as DSK progressed. In
the early chapters, she was haughty and slightly selfish, what you'd
expect a Queen to be like. As the series went on, she softened and
became more amiable. This was a move for the best, I think. Also,
she was originally going to be 15, but I thought that's a bit young
for her to be married/have a child. Her Series I outfit went through
two designs before I settled on one. She used to wear trousers,
but I swapped it for a dress. I can't stand dresses myself, so the
change was made not out of a fashion desire, but because bare legs
are easier to draw than clothes. It's shameful, I know. ^^;
Lierlo
The only change I remember Lierlo going through is that the first
ever picture I drew of him had much longer hair. I then shortened
it because he looked too much like Siun.
Tifanel
Tifanel doesn't have a last name. His full name is, as you probably
know, Experimental Biological Weapon Unit Tifanel 001, but you can't
call him that every time. If you desperately need to give him a
last name, you could call him Tifanel Owens (after Alistair) or
Tifanel Angelo (after Riley and Felicity.) Back in the day, Tifanel's
backstory was a vague and uncertain mess before I settled on a firm
history for him around the start of Series III. Before this time,
he actually had a last name of his own. He was Tifanel Izumo, but
no, that's not his name anymore. It's just Tifanel, ok?
Roreille
Roreille originally was going to be Lierlo's younger sister, but
I decided in the end to make her the eldest child, as Lierlo's later
storylines would not work unless I did. The young Roreille was going
to be much less serious, perky and have a crush on Thorn. I decided
to hand this role over to a different character, Adrienne.
Connor
and Family
Before the whole Laurenza/Red thing was decided on, I was going
to have Connor become a major character, as he'd come with Laurenza
when she moved back into the castle. This would have caused some
tension between them and Kuja, as Connor would have treated Laurenza,
himself and Ana as a family. He was also going to bring his daughter
(whose name I've totally forgotten) from his previous relationship.
She was either going to be blind or very hard of sight and she'd
befriend Kuja. Yeah, I didn't like the idea very much either, so
even before we said 'hey, let's make Laurenza a lesbian!' I dumped
the idea of Connor having a daughter in Linking Souls.
Hallowed
Knights
I'm glad I spotted this one in time. Originally, our favourite evangelists
were called something else. I accidentally discovered that an organisation
with the same name existed, though I'd rather not disclose what
it was, in case the site comes up when someone searches for it.
Let's just say the name would have rather unpleasant connotations.
Faunus
Not much changed here except his name. He was originally going to
be called 'Morpheus,' but that was way too Matrixy. I then
went for 'Aruun,' but I wanted the name for a different character,
so he ended up as Faunus.
Mina
Carter
Poor Mina had a name change and a sex change. I first envisioned
her as a man named 'Carter,' but in I've vowed to make more female
characters in Series IV, even if only incidental, so she became
a she. I kept 'Carter' as the last name and then decided to call
her 'Rose.' I changed my mind again, as I didn't want another character
with a colour name because of Red, especially a colour so similar.
It's a lucky thing I did, because only a few days after the character
was created, Thornman wrote Rose Heart and included the character
Rose(anne.) Finally, I settled on 'Mina.'

Chapter
10: Cat Girl
'Outside in the mansion grounds, Laurenza is stood looking into
a reflective pool
'
Here's Laurenza at Kuja's old digs, paying her final respects. Originally
I was going to have a scene with Laurenza putting Kuja's body to
rest in the water a la Aeris in FFVII, but him being waterlogged
would be kinda gross when he came back to life. So, I just had her
put him somewhere else
It doesn't matter where so don't worry
about it. ^^;
Chapter
19: Future Shock
Laurenza: It's too
late for me.
This is that upsetting scene in which Thorn witnesses his friends
die in an alternate future. But at the time of writing, we had our
disagreements about how the scene would play out. He wanted Thorn
to heal them back to perfect health. I wanted to keep them dead
because it was much more dramatic that way. Well, you know who won
out in the end and poor Thorn's healing spell was reserved for a
spot on the cutting room floor.
Thorn:
*Holds out his hands, as a white light starts to gather around them.*
By God and Goddess, my reform, turn my darkness to healing form.
*The white light blasts out of his hands, as healing Magick covers
Laurenza and Lierlo.* As this holy spell is dealed, by my power,
now be healed..
Chapter
37: New Light
*Loliusin Hollow, the forest at the foot of Dalimoor Head, has
a permanent eerie feel to it. No matter what time of day it is, it
is always dark and gloomy. There is something in the air that prevents
the sun from penetrating into the forest. Kuja is sat leaning against
a tree, some manuscript paper and a pen in his lap. He has his eyes
closed and is playing, though not very well, what appears to be Allen's
song on Allen's flute.*
Thorn: You're getting good.
It's
always difficult to predict the outcome of scenes, even if you've
planned them in advance. This is because you don't know what the
other person is thinking. So this is the memorable scene in Loliusin
Hollow with Kuja and Thorn stood by Allen's grave. I wanted the
scene to be a monologue with just Kuja, but you know what they say,
two heads are better than one. Here's the alternate starting to
that scene that was scrapped in the final version.
*Loliusin
Hollow has a permanent eerie feel to it, as no matter what time
of day it is, it is always dark and gloomy. There is something in
the air that prevents the sun from penetrating into the forest.
Kuja is walking though the forest, a slight breeze rippling through
his hair. He walks towards a clearing in which the earth looks newly
upturned. This is where Allen had been buried. A cross of sticks
marks his grave.*
Kuja: Hey Allen, It's me, Kuja.
I would say sorry for killing you, but it's a little late for apologies,
eh? *Sighs, and leans on a nearby tree.* You probably think I'm
nothing more than a cold-blooded killer. I wouldn't be surprised.
I mean, Laurenza seems to think that now. But I'm a much more complex
person that that. In fact, my feelings are pretty complex at the
moment. They're all mixed up... I don't know how I feel. Might do
a Lierlo and dive off of something just to make things simpler.
Chapter
68: Li's Past
This chapter was full of flashbacks about Li's life, but there was
one that didn't quite make the final cut. It explains what Li stole
Kuja's Malaphaescite shard for. But alas, the poor scene never got
used and the explanation had to wait until Chapter 94.
*In
a broken down warehouse, Li's gang are gathered, apparently waiting
for something.*
Li: *Rolls in on his bike.*
Ritz: You got it?
Li: Yep.
Chaney: Lemme see, lemme see.
Elodine: *Grabs Li's hand and
looks at it.* Pretty, ain't it?
Slim: Yeah, but think of all
the bling we can get with this baby
Ritz: Now where to flog it?
Li: We're not. *Pulls his hand
away.* You guys just don't understand what this is capable of. It
has incredible power!
Ritz: So we'll use these powers
to steal stuff.
Li: No, I'm taking it! I'm gonna
go fight the Demons
To avenge Loretta. *He starts to drive
away.*
Chaney: Li, you're crazy! No
matter how many Demons you kill, it's not gonna Loretta back.
Elodine: Let him go. He'll probably
end up joining her
Chapter
91: Malice Man
Only a small change here. Originally Kuja was going to confront
his Malice self in Finn, (didn't this remind you of Posi/Nega-Thorn?)
but what I wanted to happen just wasn't possible. Finn is not my
dimension, so I wasn't aware of the physics and stuff. Oh well,
it all worked in the end.
Chapter
95: Lost World
This chapter had a lot going on in it, but even more detail was planned
for it originally, believe it or not. They were going to run into
Leon Wildfire at the D'lor house and have a small amount of AoD-related
trouble with Kuja. This never happened in the end, because for one
thing I didn't really know what Leon would be doing on Dalimoor and
the situation was complicated enough as it was. Leon's reappearance
in DSK was pushed back to Series IV, but as you know, he was there
for a different reason. Secondly, a new female Spirit character called
Merriweather Katami was going to be introduced. Hailing from the Airgris
clan, it would have given me a chance to talk about these mysterious
Spirits. She was going to be a new love interest for Lierlo, making
the whole Lierlo/Apathy thing into a triangle. But like Leon, she
never turned up. She still hasn't been used and Airgris remains as
enigmatic as ever.
Chapter
98: Only Memories
After Chronos decreed that he would let Lahrne live, Lyrian was
going to deal out his own punishment to teach the gang the dangerous
of messing with time. Chapter 98 ended up becoming longer than expected,
so poor Lyrian had to wait until Series IV for this to happen.
Chapter
101-104: Dream Message/Ballroom Beauty/Singing King/Father Found
This small selection of chapters seems to be its own mini-story and
slightly separate from the rest of Series IV because it was meant
to be in Series III. But with all the storylines we had to wrap up
at the end, there wasn't enough space left to slip it in. There was
a very small cut from chapter 103, in which an invisble Apathy was
going to mime pushing Thorn off a cliff. It never happened in the
end (much to Thorn's pleasure, I bet!) |
